e-Bike Laws in Chicago

Published on September 5th, 2023

Knowing the law is crucial when operating any type of motor vehicle on the road–e-scooters and e-bikes included. Chicago has regulations in place for the use of electric scooters (e-scooters) on its roads.

Important e-Bike Laws in Chicago

eBikes are broken down into 3 classes; class 1, class 2, and class 3.

e-Bike Classes

  • Class 1 e-Bikes
    • Chicago allowed the use of Class 1 e-bikes on roads and bike lanes. Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assist e-bikes with a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph,
  • Class 2 e-Bikes
    • Chicago allowed the use of Class 2 e-bikes on roads and bike lanes. Class 2 e-bikes are throttle-operated e-bikes with a maximum speed of 20 mph.
  • Class 3 e-Bikes
  • Class 3 e-bikes are pedal-assist e-bikes with a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph. Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed on bike paths or trails in Chicago and are limited to streets and bike lanes.

Helmets

The use of helmets while riding e-bikes is strongly encouraged for safety and mandatory for use while riding on the road.

Standard Traffic Laws

E-bike riders are required to follow the same traffic laws as traditional bicycles. This includes obeying traffic signals and signs, yielding to pedestrians, and riding in the same direction as traffic.

Bike Lanes

E-bike riders are allowed to use bike lanes. e-Bike riders are also expected to yield to slower-moving bicycles and follow all bike lane rules.

Licensing and Registration

e-Bike users do not need a driver’s license or vehicle registration to operate e-bikes in Chicago. Please know the type of vehicle you are driving before you get on the road. Not all motorized bikes are created equal.

Age Restrictions

Class 3 e-bikes typically share a minimum age of 16 in order to be legally operated.

E-Bike Share Programs

Chicago had e-bike share programs in operation, allowing residents and visitors to rent e-bikes for short-term use. While the rules & regulations of these programs are not always the law, following them is imperative for your health and safety.

e-Bike laws are constantly evolving to accommodate the growing popularity of micromobility options. Local ordinances and regulations may also differ from state laws, so consulting local authorities or the Chicago Department of Transportation for the most current information is advisable if you plan to ride an e-bike in the city.

Important eScooter Laws in Chicago

e-Scooters have a bit more history of widespread use in most cities than e-bikes. This makes laws a bit stricter and more refined. That said, knowing the most common laws associated with regular e-scooter use can protect you and those around you from accidents and injuries.

e-Scooter Operating Zones

E-scooters are allowed to operate within designated zones specified by the city.

Speed Limits: The regulations included speed limits for e-scooters, typically capped at 15 miles per hour.

While helmet use was strongly encouraged for safety, it may not have been a legal requirement for adults. Helmet requirements for minors might have been in place.
